“Advances in Biochemicals & Push towards Bioplastics”

Asia’s biobased industries are advancing with chemicals and plastics produced at competitive prices as well as with high growth. The challenge now is to accelerate the market uptake of biobased products and applications.

CMT’s 7th Biobased Chemicals & Plastics focuses on
  • Outlook for new biobased products
  • Upscaling production
  • Consumers’ acceptance and growth drivers
  • Provides valuable insights from industry leaders on
    - full value chains from feedstock supply to application
    - sustainability benefits and end-of-life options

Biobased chemicals are becoming increasingly important to the petrochemical industry, as sustainability has become a concern for consumers in the face of global climate change. 1st and 2nd generation feedstocks (sugarcane, palm oil, cassava, corn, etc) are widely available across India, China, and ASEAN countries along with the introduction of 3rd generation feedstocks from agri-food waste. The trend is to diversify from biofuels production towards biochemicals, as the price is twice of biofuels, making them more of an attractive target. With the abundance of feedstocks and available technology, Asia has a higher advantage to grow its biobased industries with a large growing population which pushes for increased volumes of biobased products.

However, regional regulations and public policies continue to affect biobased products developments. In Asia, the majority of mandates and incentives are distributed for biofuels but new molecules are yet to have market and regulatory acceptance. One way to strengthen Asia’s competitiveness is by establishing large scale biorefineries and hubs, especially in Thailand and Malaysia.

A
sia is a major bioplastics production hub, accounting for 30% share of the global demand for bioplastics. Global production capacity is set to increase from around 2.05 million tonnes last year to an estimate of 2.44 million tonnes in 2022. There has been remarkable growth in PLA and PHA commercial manufacturing, with emerging applications being explored. Bioplastics are increasingly used in packaging, food ware, electronics, automotive, agriculture, toys, textiles and other durable products.

CMT’s 7th Biobased Chemicals & Plastics aims to present information on latest technologies, innovations, obstacles and future in the biobased industry.

Industry News

Denmark’s Lego will be launching its first brick pieces that are made out of plant-based plastic by end of 2018. The company has already started producing the environment friendly pieces that are made of biobased plastics derived from sugar cane and include “botanical elements” such as leaves, bushes, and trees.

These new pieces will also use polyethylene – which make up about 1 to 2 percent of Lego’s total plastic elements. Lego claims that these biobased bricks will still be identical to those Lego pieces produced using petroleum based plastic.

Lego is moving away from virgin plastics and aims to use more and more sustainable materials in its core products and packaging by 2030.

Lego has already invested in the research of sustainable materials with $165 million earmarked for a dedicated Sustainable Materials Centre that is researching and implementing sustainable alternatives to Lego’s current products. Besides Lego has also collaborated with WWF to reduce carbon emissions in its manufacturing and supply chain operations.

Lego also encourages donating old Lego bricks that people do not use anymore and also recycling them with regular household plastics.

Arkema has announced new investments of some €300 million in biosourced polyamide 11 chain in Asia, in a bid to increase its production capacities in the region.

The new investments that will be made over a period of five years will increase Arkema’s polyamide 11 global production capacities by 50 percent.

The investments include a world-scale plant dedicated to producing Rilsan® PA11 biosourced polyamide from castor oil. The new facility, expected to come on stream in late 2021, will be producing amino 11 monomer as well as its polymer, Rilsan® PA11. The new plant will enable Arkema to increase its Rilsan® PA11 (powder and granule) production capacity by 50% while its global production capacities for Pebax® (in particular Pebax® RNew of which amino 11 is a key component) will also increase by 50%.

Rilsan® PA11 is the only high performance 100% biosourced polyamide that qualifies for the most exacting applications particularly for electronics, 3D-printing and automotive markets, where it serves as a metal substitute.

The new investments shows Arkema’s commitment to meet demand for biosourced solutions in Asia and address challenges of lightweighting and design of materials.

Netherlands-based Parx Plastics BV is planning to build a new bioplastics manufacturing facility in China. The company has collaborated with Sino-Italy Tus Investment (Zhejiang) Co. Ltd. to setup a new joint venture named - Ningbo Parx New Materials Co. Ltd.

The production facility to be located at the Sino-Italy Ecological Park, in the Yangtze River Delta near Ningbo will be using Parx’s patented biocompatible antimicrobial plastics production technology. By applying biomimetics and nanotechnology, Parx developed a method to make an intrinsic change to plastic, resulting in a mechanical/physical property that acts against bacteria and micro-organisms.

The technology doesn’t use any chemicals, biocides, heavy metals or nano-particles when producing plastics. Instead, it makes use of zinc salts, which are incorporated during polymerization into the polymeric structure of the thermoplastic, thus eliminating the risk of migration. Zinc is completely biocompatible too.

In 2014, Parx Plastics launched its first ready-to-use Saniconcentrates for manufacturers in Europe and the U.S. to safely create self-sanitising products with an antibacterial property of up to 99% within 24 hours.

The Sino-Italy Ecological Park is a JV between the Chinese and Italian governments that aims to promote resource saving, environment friendly and ecological innovations. The 40-square-kilomter zone plans to house companies in the field of new materials, plastics, automotive, aerospace and clean energy.

Prospects of bioplastics in Asia will be discussed at CMT’s 7th Biobased Chemicals and Plastics on 5-8 June, 2018, in Bangkok.
