The Protein, which has long been associated with fitness, health and wellness is expanding rapidly into mainstream products migrating from infant nutrition to snacks and consumer packaged goods. What are the factors driving this growth in Asia?

Frost & Sullivan points out 3 - increase in health and fitness, heart health and growing consumer correlation of beauty and healthy eating.

The health benefits of protein intake from fast muscle recovery to weigh control is driving protein uptake and its use in functional foods in Asia.

Hot on the heels and trending now is plant protein.

Around the world, governments are promoting less animal protein in diets of their populations. The Chinese government announced efforts to curb meat consumption by 50% among its nearly 1.4 billion citizens.

Innova Market Insights reports that plant proteins will move into a "disruptive phase" this year, with food companies leveraging functional and technical benefits of plants in new product developments.

Why are plant proteins soaring ? No doubt consumers increasingly recognize that concerns about global warming and finite resources demand a shift toward more plant-based diets.

But can plant proteins provide the body’s nutrient needs ?  Do we need to combine these proteins with other protein sources to make a "complete" protein ?

Philippine food based company Monde Nissin is bringing Quorn, the world-leader in meat alternatives, to the market as it sets eyes on Asia as its newest domain. Mycoprotein is a healthy protein meat substitute made by fermenting a type of fungus.

Parabel’s Clean Green Protein from water based lentils  boasts a nutritional profile unlike any other plant-based protein supplement.

As novel protein sources are introduced to the market,   manufacturers need to address regulatory, and compliance issues.

Industry News

DuPont Nutrition & Health has recently launched a new series of protein rich nuggets – that allow food manufacturers to experiment and use them in snacks, bars and cereals.

The new plant based nuggets under the brand name - SUPRO® - contains 90 percent protein. In addition these nuggets are also clean label and they have a neutral flavor and crispy, crunchy texture. DuPont says that their high protein level can help formulators achieve desired protein levels while using liberal amounts of nuts, seeds and fruit to add visual appeal.

DuPont is also credited for being the first supplier to offer a 90 percent protein nugget with the initial introduction of SUPRO® Nuggets 570, a light, crispy textured nugget with a barrel shape.

The three new nuggets added to DuPont’s portfolio have each nugget featuring a unique shape, size and texture.

DuPont uses plant based proteins from peas and soy. Its TRUPRO™ Pea Protein Nuggets provides plant-based protein derived from Canadian yellow peas. Pea protein has an added advantage as it does not require to be labeled as an allergen and is non-GM. It is beneficial for food manufacturers that are looking at meeting the demand for plant protein rich food items.

More about plant protein will be discussed at CMT’s Food Proteins Asia 2017 on 9-10 November in Bangkok.

The global protein ingredients market is forecast to grow by more than 7% to reach US$43.3 billion by 2024. Among key growth regions is Southeast Asia. As the need to be healthier becomes more important, nutritious diets – especially protein-fortified food and beverages are becoming increasingly popular. Protein that was once viewed as a source of ‘fitness’ is now being perceived as a ‘health and wellness’ ingredient.

Some of the key markets in Southeast Asia are – Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. For instance, Singaporeans are focused on health and fitness, which is driving the demand for protein-fortified diets in the country. Singapore’s ageing population and rise in chronic medical conditions are also likely to open the market for more protein consumption in the future. Meanwhile in other Southeast Asian countries, factors such as rise in incomes levels is a key driving force to boost demand for protein fortified food and beverages.

Another trend that is shaping the industry is ‘convenience’. Consumers are choosing more on-the-go snacks and drinks such as cookies, snack bars and ready to drink beverages, particularly sports drinks, as well as purchasing protein in powder form.

All these trends present huge opportunities for companies such as NZMP – the dairy ingredient business of Fonterra – that has protein ingredients products.

NZMP has led the way in developing dairy protein ingredients and offers the largest range of dairy protein ingredients in the industry marketed under the NZMP SureProtein™ brand. NZMP customers use protein in a wide range of food and beverage products including cheese, protein shakes and yoghurt snacks and protein is now appearing in new convenient formats such as chips, beverages and gels.

In fact NZMP’s sales for protein ingredients in Southeast Asia have more than doubled over the last two years.

NZMP also plans to capture this growing market by collaborating with regional companies to develop new protein-related products targeted at Southeast Asia.

NZMP has collaborated with other companies, and is working with the Fonterra Research and Development Centre in Palmerston North to develop new, innovative dairy products. They expect to unveil these products to the market in 2018.

For more information about protein markets in Asia, attend CMT’s Food Proteins Asia 2017 on 9-10 November in Bangkok.

Plant-based protein – soy has a growing demand across food and beverages given its health and wellness benefits as well as economic value compared to dairy proteins. It not only offers direct cost savings, but also more stable pricing over time.

To capture this demand in the fast growing Ready to Drink Beverages sector, DuPont Nutrition & Health has launched its new SUPRO XT55 Isolated Soy Protein, that is designed specifically to improve the profitability of RTDs and high protein beverages.

The solution is a more cost-effective protein ingredient for beverage manufacturers.

Dairy and soy proteins formulations are common in a variety of beverages – not just for controlling costs but also to improve flavours. However, in certain RTD beverage formulas, traditional soy proteins would build too much viscosity or tend to be less stable over time – that limits the amount of dairy protein being replaced. The New SUPRO XT55 from DuPont addresses these obstacles.

DuPont claims that the new soy protein isolate can replace up to 50 percent of the dairy protein in beverage formulations without compromising sensory performance or protein nutrition. Plus, it also enables perfect balance of viscosity and protein stability, and is cost-effective. Moreover, given that it is a plant-based protein, it is sustainable and provides the nutrition and health benefits of soy protein.

When replacing dairy, New SUPRO XT55 will have no impact on the protein quality of the finished formula. Like DuPont’s other SUPRO Proteins, New SUPRO XT55  demonstrates its value for heart health, muscle building and maintenance, weight management and healthy growth and development.

For more information on soy protein markets, attend CMT’s Food Proteins Asia 2017 on 9-10 November in Bangkok.
