It is almost impossible for most consumers to go a day without using or eating something that contains palm oil. The most widely used vegetable oil there is, palm oil is found in everything from snacks to household cleaners to cosmetics. About an estimation of 58 million tonnes of palm oil are produced every year, with Indonesia and Malaysia accounting for 85 per cent of total output.

For this year, a recent survey shows that companies are optimistic about production growth prospects and that supplies will continue to rise during the high production cycle that typically begins in the second half of the year. Will demand remain firm throughout the 2nd half of the year ?
The cheaper and most resource efficient than other vegetable oils, palm oil is also one of the world’s most controversial ingredients.
Most recently , a report released earlier this year by EFSA suggested that palm oil produces GE and 3-MCPD , chemical elements that are carcinogenic when heated above 200 degrees Celsius. How is the industry responding to mitigate and reduce the levels of these contaminants ?
Since April last year , following a series of measures taken to address their multi-decade fire and haze crises, Indonesian President Joko Widodo declared his intention to impose a moratorium on new palm oil concessions.
The Government of Indonesia is now taking steps to limit further landbank expansion , at the same time that compliance with No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation (NDPE) is increasingly becoming a condition for market access . This has also led to many material stranded assets for which companies cannot develop without regulations.
In Feb this year, Europe’s largest bank HSBC made its commitment consistent with NDPE policies adopted by market leaders and will not agree to any new financing violating this policy which applies to refiners, traders, growers and mills. Pressures continue on the industry’s growth potential, driving companies to strategise how to increase productivity on existing plantations through replanting , smallholder capacity building, investing in smart agriculture, finding added value for palm oil waste ,improved planting materials among others. Companies are aiming to achieve full traceable supply chains in order to verify the implementation of supply chain commitments.
However, achieving traceability poses significant challenges due to the complexity of the palm oil supply chain.

EU, one of the world's largest palm oil consumers is now taking a lead position in limiting its palm oil consumption – particularly in palm oil based biofuels.
This year Czech GUE/NGL (European United Left/Nordic Green Left) member Kateřina Konečná has called on the European Commission to step up its efforts to promote responsible cultivation of palm oil and prevent palm oil-related deforestation – that has endangered Sumatran rhinoceros, the Sumatran tigers and the Bornean orang-utans. The appeal also calls on the European Commission to phase out palm oil usage in the production of biodiesel by 2020 and introduce certification on products for using socially responsible origin of palm oil.
Used in a wide variety of products from margarine, chocolate spreads, crisps, to cosmetics, detergents and biofuels, the use of palm oil has more than doubled since 2010. According to estimates by the GUE/NGL, it will again double by 2050.
Some of the advocates of EU produced ethanol say that EU produces renewable ethanol from crops grown by European farmers under the most sustainable conditions in the world. By limiting palm oil and its derivatives in the renewable transportation fuels they believe EU can reduce greenhouse gases, without causing environmental problems elsewhere.

Malaysia – the world’s second largest palm oil producer – has made its Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification mandatory for all palm oil plantations by December 2019. The new move is largely seen to make the country’s palm oil industry more attractive to international buyers – especially from Europe that are very particular about procuring only certified sustainable palm oil in compliance with global standards.
Started in 2015, MSPO certification was given only on voluntary basis until now. As of December 2016, Malaysia had a total of 222,778ha of palm oil plantations certified by MSPO.
The MSPO certification will be carried out in 3 phases. For plantations that already have the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification, the deadline for MSPO will be Dec 31, 2018. The plantations that are not RSPO certified, need to procure their MSPO certification by June 30, 2019. The third phase will include smallholders that have to get their certification done by Dec 31, 2019.
The MSPO will be helpful for smallholders – for whom RSPO certification is very difficult to get.
The European Union is the second biggest market for Malaysian palm oil. In 2016, Malaysia’s palm oil and palm-based product exports to EU earned them RM10.30 billion, an increase of 4% from RM9.89 billion in 2015.
Malaysia’s Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry will be getting the financial incentives ready this June to help the industry with the certification process.
