Investment and Innovation in Feed & Feed Ingredients - Products, Technologies and Business Models

International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF) projects the global feed production growth in 2016 of 1-2 %, with output of around 1 billion tons, in line with FAO’s forecasted increase in animal protein production.  However, significant growth is anticipated in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Consolidation continues to shape the agribusiness landscape and vertical integration is the trend moving forward as farm grows in size and producers become more sophisticated. What is the investment strategy and business model to succeed in a competitive feed industry? Which are the “hot” growth sectors? What are the alternative feed ingredients and production technology to give a competitive edge?

CMT’s 2nd Global Feed Summit brings together leading industry players in the value chain to share strategy and thoughts on the feed industry demand trends.

Industry News

In continuation of its long-term development strategy in Vietnam, Dutch firm Royal De Heus has opened its 7th animal feed factory in Mang Thit District, Vinh Long Province. It is the second facility in Vinh Long by De Heus, the first of which specialises in aquafeed. The new factory – Vinh Long 2 – will produce feed for cattle, pigs and poultry.

De Heus, one of the five biggest animal feed producers in the country, has invested more than US$30 million in Vinh Long 2. It will have a capacity of 250,000 tonnes a year in the first phase – and gradually increase the total Vietnam output to one million tonnes a year.

Vinh Long 2 is the first plant with a river port. Utilising the water ways, the logistics of incoming raw materials and outgoing finished products can be organised in a more efficient manner between Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Mekong Delta region.

Gabor Fluit, De Heus Asia’s business group director, says the new facility is an important next step in their goal of contributing to the further agricultural development of Vietnam. The Vietnamese animal feed market has developed rapidly, with an average growth rate of 10-13 per cent a year. The animal feed market is expected to reach $10.55 billion by 2022.

Cambodia is estimated to require about 600,000 tonnes of animal feed per year and these numbers are expected to increase dramatically. Given such demand, Thailand based Betagro Group opened a feed mill in Phnom Penh this year, with an annual production capacity of 200,000 tonnes.

Located in Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (PPSEZ), the facility is the Group’s first and only feed mill outside Thailand.

The plant is built at a cost of USD30 million [Bt1 billion] – and is expected to produce high quality feed for pigs, laying hens, broiler chickens, laying ducks, native chickens and cattle under the brands Be-lac, Betagro, Bio and Balance.

Betagro already caters to about 200 feed customers in Cambodia and the new facility will help them expand in the market further. The Group’s feed mills in Thailand have been exporting feed for terrestrial and aquatic animals to Cambodia for over 10 years. The group also has presence in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap where it operates parent stock farms, contract farming, broiler farms, and pullet farms as well as Betagro Shop outlets.

They also plan to target larger and mid-sized farms with their new feed brand – Farm.

Besides Cambodia, Betagro plans to expand its feed-production base to Asean Economic Community (AEC) countries.

Animal feed investments in Asia will be further discussed at CMT’s 2nd Global Feed Summit on 16-17 May, 2016 in Bangkok.

Olam is expanding into Nigeria’s animal feed business - setting up poultry and fish feed mills as well as hatcheries. Olam expects that the commercial feed market in Nigeria will grow at over 10% CAGR over the next five years. Nigeria’s high meat consumption per capita, good commercial feed penetration, and other factors worked in its favor to be chosen as the entry market.

After the announcement in November 2015 to enter Nigeria’s feed market, Olam announced early this year its collaboration with French feedstock company InVivo Animal Nutrition & Health. The two companies has agreed on a two-year consulting partnership to develop expertise in animal feed in Nigeria that includes developing solutions, formulating animal feed, characterizing raw materials and implementing R&D trials and protocols.

It’s expected that InVivo will assist Olam to design the feed mills and help with equipment selection and installation of its feed mills across Nigeria.

Olam will also leverage on InVivo’s R&D, product development facilities and feed manufacturing units across Asia and Latin America.

More on animal feed investments will be discussed at CMT’s 2nd Global Feed Summit on 16-17 May, 2016 in Bangkok.
