“Positioning to Grow Your Market Share in Africa’s Competitive Cement Sector”

“Rwanda: PPC has commissioned its 600,000t/yr cement plant in Rwanda to offset declining sales in South Africa as its expansion into African cement markets gathers pace. The company plans to derive 40% of its revenues from the rest of Africa by 2017.”

“Dangote to build cement plants in 18 African countries…… Aliko Dangote has said the firm would build cement plants in 18 African countries, including Nepal in Asia to make the continent import-dependent free”
http://www.vanguardngr.com/, 11/10/15.

Cameroon soon to get its fifth cement plant…. The Switzerland-based Mira company has revealed plans to build a cement plant in the Cameroonian city of Douala under an agreement signed with the government of Cameroon.

After the Holcim-Lafarge merger, there is yet another major deal –– HeidelbergCement acquiring a major stake in Italcementi. It remains to be seen how the acquisition will impact cement markets globally as well as in Africa – where both majors have substantial investments.
Competition in Africa’s cement market is getting stiffer with numerous investments and capacity expansion – fueled by the demand for infrastructure & construction activities – Dangote Cement recently commissioned a 1.5 MTPA grinding unit in Cameroon and have already signed a contract to double its capacities to 3 MTPA; while work is in progress to build a US$395m cement plant in Kitui, Kenya; PPC to spend $200 million expanding its Zimbabwean production facilities by 2020; CIMAF plans Guinea-Bissau investment and CIMERWA eyeing DRC and Burundi cement markets with its new expanded plant in Rwanda.

Besides these African players, Turkey’s Limak Holding Group’s $40m cement plant in Mozambique is to start operation this year while their Cote D’voire plant to start construction this year. DR Congo finally see the first cement plant to be built in 40 years from the 50/50 JV between Lucky Cement and Group Rawji. India's Sanghi Group ‘s US$119m cement plant in West Pokot, Kenya will start construction this year.

Against the slowdown in the global cement industry, Africa continues to attract investments in the cement sector, building up capacities to meet the ever increasing demand.

Attend CMT’s 8th Africa Cementrade Summit on 15-16 March 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda to gain first hand insights and updates on what’s new and emerging in Africa!

Rwanda’s Cement Production gets a Boost with New Plant

Posted on : 01 Feb, 2016

Rwanda’s cement production is set to surge with the inauguration of the CIMERWA plant.

The country has been importing more than 500,000 tons of cement to meet its demand. The new plant will increase Rwanda’s annual cement production to 600,000 tons per year. This will allow the country to export 30% of its total cement production (about 200,000 tons) annually.

The new cement plant is expected to also boost its export revenues to over $85million per year. The country has set a target of reducing its trade deficit with an aim to boost cement exports by 28% every year by 2018.

Rwanda is looking at exporting to neighboring countries such as Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.

The new plant is located in Bugarama, Rusizi district, to the Western Province of Rwanda. It meets global standards and uses the best practices in the cement industry to produce high-grade cement.

Busi Legodi, CEO of Cimerwa will elaborate more on Rwanda’s cement markets at 8th Africa CemenTrade Summit scheduled on 15-16 March, 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda.

CIMAF Commissions Cement Plant in Cameroon

Posted on : 30 Nov, 2015

Afrique Ciment (CIMAF), a subsidiary of Morocco’s Addoha Group, commissioned its plant in Cameroon recently.

The plant is located in industrial area of Bonaberi in Douala.

The plant has a cement production capacity of 500,000 tons per year. The first foundation stone of the facility was laid in 2012 and over CFA 20 billion francs have been invested in the project.

CIMAF sees the cement plant “contributing to the development of intra-African cooperation”.

Locally made cement bags with CIMAF insignias are sold in Cameroon and in the Central African region, strengthening the supply of the building material.

Cameroon also has other cement producers such as Cement of Cameroon (CIMENCAM) a subsidiary of the French group Lafarge and Dangote Group (DCM).

More on cement markets in Africa will be discussed at the 8th Africa CemenTrade Summit on 15-16 March, 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda.
