"Untapped & Emerging Opportunities for Starch Food & Industrial Markets in the Middle East Region"

Late last year, Cargill and Arasco join hands to create the first starches and sweeteners joint venture (JV) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia calling it ‘Middle East for Food Solutions Co (MEFSCO) More starch producers in the region from Turkey to Egypt are expanding their production capacities  to take advantage of the regions’ untapped opportunities . The Middle East region represents the highest growth area for the food and drink industry in the world. The rapidly changing demographics in the region and the growth of consumer choices presents an exciting opportunity for  starch and sweetener, food ingredients suppliers to offer customers new and broader portfolio of products and solutions

We are already seeing positive impacts of this happening when Turkey most recently announce that starch based sugar quota determined as 244,400 tonnes for the 2013/14 marketing year by the Sugar Council was decided to be increased by a rate of 25%

Starch is a versatile and useful component that can be modified for use in many applications including emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickening agents, and coated papers.  Increasing applications within the food and beverages sector is the strongest driver for the global modified starch market. But the the Mideast region also presents many opportunities for starch in industrial usages.

CMT has carefully put together a panel of starch producers active in the region, consultants and process solutions providers to come together in Istanbul this 4-5th Nov and share key developments happening in the region. The Starch market and their applications will be analysed on the basis of the types of raw materials and regional demand.

Industry News

In a report by RnR Market Research, it's estimated that the starch derivatives market will grow at a rate of 6.2% from 2014 to 2019. The extensive growth rate is attributed to the technological advancements in the industry that are expanding the applications of starch derivatives.

It's expected that the global starch market will grow at a modest rate between 2014 to 2019 with the growth rate likely to reach higher levels in five years, due to more R&D in the field.

Starch derivatives are widely used in the food & beverages sector, as thickener, stabilizer, etc., thus the growing food industry is contributing to the demand for starch derivatives.

Apart from the growth of food industry, rise in disposable incomes is another growth driver for the starch derivatives sector. Current estimates reveal that among various types of starch derivatives, glucose syrup hold a major market share, whereas, maltodextrin is expected to grow at the fastest rate.

The report further reveals that major players are using a strategy of launching new products in a short span of time and expanding the already-existing utilities. Many of them are also investing in R&D, to stay ahead of competitors. Cargill Inc. (U.S.), ADM (U.S.), Ingredion (U.S.), Penford (U.S.), Tate & Lyle (U.K.), and Roquette (France) are some of the market leaders identified in the report.

More on starch derivatives will be discussed at Starch World Mideast (Starch Derivatives, Sweeteners & Polyols) opening on 4-5 November, 2014, in Istanbul.
