"Rising Affluence & Changing Lifestyles Drive HPC Demand in Emerging Markets"

"With international cosmetics and toiletries manufacturers taking a firm foothold in the Middle East, the beauty and personal care market in the region continues to enjoy growth in most categories with Saudi Arabia and UAE leading the way... The UAE and Saudi Arabia continue to attract the world's most significant beauty care retailers and manufacturers with colour cosmetics, hair care, fragrances and skin care leading the way."
[July 2012, dubaibeautycare.com]

The demand for surfactants in the Middle East is accelerating with new capacities set to meet the regional needs. Looking ahead at higher performance-focused and multi-functional products, the Middle East's desires for enhanced quality standards open up vast opportunities for specialty chemicals raw materials suppliers. This new trend will be covered at CMT's 3rd Surfactants HPC in Emerging Markets as Mr Adil Shaikh, Marketing Director for Henkel presents the availability and changing requirements of raw materials from a sustainability angle.

"Demand for surfactants in the CIS is growing at more than 6% annually... RusPAV is expected to be operational in 2015. SIBUR will contribute its raw materials, production and logistics capabilities to the joint venture... Novecare, a worldwide leader in surfactants, will provide its expertise in surfactant technologies, its knowledge of formulations, market applications and its worldwide customer network."
[9 October 2012, sibur.com]

Find out more on the surfactant demand growth in Russia and CIS regions as Mr Michael Shukov, General Manager for RusPav updates on the new surfactant capacity and key market drivers.

Over to Africa and focusing on Nigeria, where the rapid urbanization and expanding middle class have led to the demand for beauty and personal care products. With the arrival of leading HPC companies in the country, usage of task specific products has become popular as opposed to multipurpose soap bars previously. Dr Pieter Stroek from PZ Cussons gives insights on the demographics of Nigeria, and the different needs of local consumers, highlighting the opportunities and constraints for both local and international players.

Like the rest of the world, the use of green surfactants in the Middle East is gradually gaining market share. Will the demand in sustainable products balance the economics of using natural or bio-based materials? Hear from Dr Merete Faergemand, Novozymes, as she speaks on the strategies for cost stabilization on bio-based solutions for laundry detergents.

Personal care demand in Nigeria & Ghana drives local palm oil production
Posted on : 03 Jan, 2013

Burgeoning middle class in Nigeria and Ghana is driving personal care products demand, causing a domino-effect of increased demand in local palm oil production.

According to research and analysis by Frost & Sullivan,

“Nigeria, the third largest palm oil producer in the world, earned revenues of $205.3mil in 2011, a figure that is estimated to reach $290.4mil in 2016. Similarly, Ghana’s revenues are predicted to increase from $53.2mil in 2011 to $72.8mil in 2016.”

Soaps, shower gels and body lotions are gradually dropping out of the non-essential category and shifting into the daily products list. Palm oil, being a common ingredient in these personal care products is hence seeing a surge in demand.

Nigeria and Ghana is now looking at increasing palm oil production and cutting back on their reliance on Malaysian and Indonesian imports.

This will be driven by Ghana government initiatives and changes in the trading pattern will be expected within the next five years.

Nigeria also plans to strengthen the agricultural sector to further promote economic growth.

More information on the personal care sector in emerging markets available at the 3rd Surfactants HPC Summit.
