"Competitive MidEast PET Producers Lead Global Exports"
"Targeting Africa's PET Market - New Opportunities"

The Middle East has emerged as the region of choice for PET investments, targeting the growing local demand as well as export markets such as Africa and Europe. New capacities in Nigeria, Egypt, Turkey, Oman and Saudi Arabia have placed the PET resin trade in the region as a formidable force; shifting the global landscape.

"Thailand-based Indorama has started production at a 75,000 tonne per annum PET plant in Port Harcourt, Nigeria - the first in west Africa... Indorama says it set up the plant in Nigeria because the company is one of the fastest growing economies in Europe with an estimated PET demand of 53,000 tonnes." July 2012, European Plastics News

"OCTAL has tripled its annual production capacity of PET resin used for water, juice and soft drink bottles this month with the commissioning of two of the world's largest vertical reactors at the company's leading-edge PET Complex in Salalah. With a total system output of 1 million metric tons per year of PET bottle grade resin, OCTAL has firmly secured its stature in the industry as the largest PET producing site in the world at any single location." Sep 2012, Albawaba Business

Rapid changes in consumers' behaviour and more convenient and sustainable packaging trends are driving the PET industry in the region to embark on continuous efforts toward light-weighting, greater flexibility in preform production and new market applications. Furthermore, the PET recycling sector is catching up in the Middle East as demand for RPET continues to become more prevalent for the global packaging and polyester fiber industry.

Industry News

Sipa SpA and Athena Automation Ltd. are partnering to introduce a new line of automated PET preform injection and blow molding equipment into the market.

The equipment will set new industry standard in efficiency and quality as they bring together Sipa’s injection press technology and Athena’s expertise in cooling technology. With the new technology, injection and blow-molding can be merged to form a much more efficient “1½-step system”.

The use of cold preforms in this process will also raise the quality as cold preforms are more scratch- and mar- resistant.

Other features mentioned by Athena include “fast cycles, improved accuracy, increased uptime and a smaller footprint”.

Mr. Enrico Gribaudo, General Manager of Sipa SpA, is optimistic about the collaboration, and quoted that the new line will be “a breakthrough in the industry”. He will be speaking at the 14th MEAPET Summit in Dubai on 26-27 February 2013, emphasizing on “Today and Tomorrow Innovation for Preform/Bottle Technology”.

For more information or enquiries, please contact Ms. Hafizah at hafizah@cmtsp.com.sg or Tel. 65 6346 9218.

Trends in the PET market are expected to evolve even faster now with innovations that revealed much lower energy usage and time consumption for higher quality PET production.

Octal’s $600 million investment and four years of dedication in technology and innovation gave rise to a brainchild of patented technology and proprietary processes, boosting the company to become one of the most watched and largest PET resin manufacturer in the Middle East region.

With their new technology, boundaries are pushed as results show significant carbon footprint reduction in the proprietary processes as compared to traditional manufacturing processes. Advances in the production of PET bottle resins and DPET are being observed, with continuous efforts to improve energy efficiency and effectiveness.

Entering the market with food packaging as the target, Octal has since gained its grounds in the market. With their rapid progress, Octal is quick in seeing trends and opportunities, targeting the consumer products segment next, which includes “toothbrushes and toys and other packaging segments that don’t use PET today”.

Trends are changing. Technology is progressing. Be updated on the region’s competitive and sustainable market at the 14th MEAPET summit.
