Stepan researchers have developed a mild surfactant, derived from natural feedstocks, that works effectively with various hydrotropic surfactants to improve viscosity, foaming and mildness in hair and skin care products.

 

Cetyl betaine is an amphoteric surfactant that is made by reacting naturally-derived alkyl dimethyl tertiary amine with sodium monochloroacetate. In general, betaines are known to possess multifunctional properties in personal care hair and skin cleansing products including: viscosity building, foam volume enhancement, foam stability, improved skin and eye mildness and skin feel.

 

Although mid-chain alkyl dimethyl and alkyl amidopropyl betaine surfactants are well known and extensively used in personal care products with conventional primary surfactants such as alkyl sulfates and alkyl ethoxy sulfates, they have not been found to function as efficient thickeners when combined with new generation sulfate-free surfactants. Sulfate-free personal care products have become very popular recently as evidenced by introduction of several new commercial brands, as well as new products under existing brands.

China underwent significant transformation and expansion in its beauty and personal care industry over the past decade, thanks to its large population and rapid economic development. Total sales of beauty and personal care stood at US$24 billion in 2010, more than triple the size in 2000.

 

The fast-expanding middle class of consumers in China has had a significant impact on spending patterns in beauty and personal care, particularly in the premium segment. The oleochemical market, even glycerin, saw a significant improvement last year in terms of demand and operating rates compared with the 2009 slump.

 

The fatty acids sector, often seen as an indicator for the economy, saw improved worldwide demand, while fatty alcohols, which were predicted to be oversupplied because of huge Asian capacity rises in the past few years, was anything but in 2010, notes Norman Ellard, director of Singapore-based consulting and trading company Rohen. "Likely estimates of average capacity utilization would be 85% in fatty acids and closer to 90% for fatty alcohols, not including some unplanned shutdowns in the industry," says Ellard. "Market growth was healthy, driven by rapidly increasing demand in the large growing economies of China and India."

The economic recovery began in 2009, continued unabated in 2010 and shows no signs of slowing down in 2011, according to analysts. That’s good news for raw material suppliers to the global household and laundry care industry, many of which continued to post impressive gains quarter after quarter since plumbing the depths of the recession.

 

Perhaps no company in the industry is more optimistic about the future than BASF, which completed its €3.1 billion acquisition of Cognis in December. The move strengthened BASF’s leading position in value-added products for home care and gave it a leading position in personal care ingredients as well. BASF will announce integration plans by the end of the first quarter and complete the structural integration by the end of the year.
