Economic Recovery Drives PVC Demand...But Where And Which Applications?

According to Global Industry Analysts, construction market accounts for about 60% of total PVC demand. Developing countries in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East hold the best prospects for PVC in the long term. Among these, China and India represent the most promising markets due to large population size and infrastructural development initiatives. India is expected to witness an increase in demand due to the growth in infrastructure and packaging sectors. China represents the fastest growing market for PVC with a projected CAGR of 4.7% during the analysis period.

The recent earthquake in Japan has reduced almost 50% of PVC capacity in Japan, resulting in supply shortages and price increases in Asia. How long will this tightness continue? With volatility in feedstock prices, how will it impact feedstock supply for PVC production?

In Russia and Ukraine, demand for vinyl continues to grow due to increased demand from the construction industry, regardless of the economic slowdown in the region. How will the demand/supply dynamics change when Karpatneftekhim's PVC plant comes on-stream this year?

PVC demand in Middle East and Africa see healthy growth and what are the opportunities & challenges for suppliers to the region?

Latin America is another region, which holds bright prospects for PVC growth owing to increase in construction activity. Brazil, host to FIFA World Cup 2014 and Olympic Games 2016 sees a surge in infrastructure development which drives the demand for PVC to a new high. What are the opportunities available to PVC producers and traders who are eyeing these lucrative markets?

Industry News

Funke, of Hamm-Uentrop, Germany, recently reached agreement with Kazakhstan’s national export and investment agency Kaznex Invest for the construction of a PVC profiles production plant. The Eur18m investment with 25,000 tpa capacity unit will be built in the industrial zone of the Kazakh capital Astana, reported the agency.

Sixty per cent of the plant’s production is expected to be exported to Russia, with 30% going to the domestic market and the remaining 10% being sold in Central Asia, the Kazakh agency said.

The fact that the Astana project is 100% foreign funded indicates the “high confidence in the investment climate of Kazakhstan and the efficient running of the government”, said Marhabbat Balgabaev, European regional director of Kaznex
Invest.

Latin America is expected to endure short supply of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in the near term due in part to the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, and also as a consequence of a power blackout in Brazil that occurred in early February.

US producer Shintech is shipping substantial volumes of PVC to Asia to help replace some of the lost production in Japan. As a result of this shift in target, Shintech's usual exports to the Americas dropped to approximately 80% of historical volumes. Shintech is a major PVC exporter to Mexico and to countries on the Pacific coast of Latin America.

Further compounding the tight supply situation for Latin America, other US suppliers are reported to have limited availability for export to those countries, to which they usually sell through traders rather than directly to processors there.

American PVC offers have been emerging at noticeably higher levels in many global markets including Turkey, Egypt, Italy and China, tracking a similar trend as March, as per Chemorbis. In a weekly comparison, prices for American PVC to Turkey are US$65-95/ton higher. Furthermore, players in Turkey report hearing American PVC prices at least US$40/ton above the current levels. In Egypt, following a trader who sold out his American PVC cargoes in the import market with increases of around US$20/ton week over week, new offers for this origin have started to show up even higher for new shipments, pulling the high end of this week’s American offer rangeup by US$78/ton on CIF Alexandria, cash equivalent basis. Buyers also confirmed that the newly emerged pricesindicate significant increases compared to the previous levels, attributing this situation to the ongoing repercussions of the Japan earthquake which caused VCM supplies and PVC availability in turn, to tighten across Asia, paving the way for higher PVC prices out of America.

Is the rise of PVC prices set to continue? How long will this trend last and when will buyers gain some reprieve? To address the impact of the above developments on international PVC trade, senior industry executives from across the PVC supply chain will gather at the 6th Global Chlor-Vinyl Markets conference held in Istanbul on 9-10 June 2011 to share their insights.

Besides providing a global overview of the PVC industry, authoritative speakers will zoom in on the PVC market outlook in the different key regions via country-focused presentations.

Players in Southeast Asia’s domestic PVC markets expect to see another month of firmer prices in March as regional producers are beginning to express intentions of raising prices in March, as per Chemorbis. A producer in Vietnam has pioneered March PVC hikes to the region by lifting initial March offers by ten dollars on the high end of the range when compared with the past week. Producers pointed to escalating upstream costs, firming regional trends as well as their expectations of better demand in March along with the beginning of the high season for the construction industry.

GBI Research is expecting global PVC demand to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.9 percent to reach around 64.3 million metric tons in 2020.

GBI said: “The impact of global economic downturn has resulted in the slowdown in the construction industry worldwide. As more than 50 percent of the PVC is used in construction applications, there has been a downturn in the demand of PVC in many countries in the last few years. But as the economies recover from the recessionary times, the demand for PVC is expected to grow at a faster rate in the coming years to 2020.”

Following a period of downturn in demand for the past few years, PVC markets are finally expected to return in full force.

Key topics to be addressed include World economic outlook & forecast for 2011/12, country-focused highlights on Croatia, Baltic/Russia, Turkey, Middle East, Asia, USA, Brazil & Africa, changing trade patterns, end-users panel and more.
