Bioplastics - Poised for next level of Growth - with New Applications & Innovations!
The road ahead for the Bioplastics sector looks set to be an exciting one!
Global demand for bioplastics continues to grow by leaps and bounds, as new applications and innovations catch the interest of "green" conscious end-users. Asia is not far behind.
Pira International reported that Global demand for bioplastic packaging is forecast to reach 884,000 tons by 2020. This translates to a compound annual growth rate of 24.9% from 2010-15 slowing to a CAGR of 18.3% in the five years to 2020. According to the study, a new breed of bioplastics will be major drivers as packaging market demand gradually shifts from biodegradable and compostable polymers towards biopackaging based on renewable and sustainable materials.
Recently implemented regulations are also compelling companies to reduce their carbon footprint, making bioplastics a logical choice.
But in order to realise the investment opportunities in emerging bioplastics markets in Asia, it is essential for producers to first address concerns regarding supply capacities and sustainability.
At 5th Bioplastics Markets you will hear the most authoritativeand in-depth analysis of these crucial issues and more.

This conference is also your 1 stop access to valuable business relationships with the world's Bioplastics community! Come prepared with your namecards to network with:

Against a global green agenda, bioplastics continues to rein supreme. Bioplastics accounts for less than 2% of the petrochemical-based polymer consumption, but this market has been rapidly developing over the past few years.

With the increasing use of plant-based sources for bioplastics, comes the hot issue of sustainability. Corn and sugarcane used to produce bioplastics are primarily for consumption and this could be threatened by the growth of bioplastics. More and more bioplastics producers are looking at alternatives such as cellulosics and non-food wastes like potato-skin. One recent example is the development of bioplastics made of plant stems and cashew nut shells by NEC.
"Packaging is one of the most advanced fields of applications for bioplastics, both in biobased and biodegradable plastics" [1 October 2010, packagingnews.co.uk] Flexible films form the biggest part of the bioplastics market and we see increasing demand for such films in every country. Many packaging producers and brand owners are collaborating in a bid to inject as much "green-ness" in their products as possible.
As the bioplastics industry progresses, we see increasing use of biobased materials in durable goods in the electronics and automotive sectors. Bio-polyurethanes would soon be used in cars and running shoes and Fujitsu just created a bioplastic mouse made from non-food source. These are just a few of the many emerging bioplastics applications in durable products these days. What new research & developments are brand owners and producers coming up with to increase the percentage of bioplastics in their products?
How is the bioplastic industry developing in some of the Asian countries? What are the challenges faced in the India, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong and what are some of their government regulations/legislations in place to support the bioplastics movement? What are the latest updates on compostability testing and what are the lessons learnt that can be put into use?
