Cost Effective CBM Exploration Workshop

2 day crucial workshop for all CBM players on Getting your CBM exploration and production planning right.

Indonesia is estimated to hold huge CBM reserves of about 453.3 trillion cubic feet (TCF) spread across 11 hydrocarbon basins. Out of these estimated reserves, as much as 112.47 TCF has been categorized as proven reserves and 57.60 TCF is still seen as potential reserves.

The South Sumatra Basin, the largest CBM basin in Indonesia, is estimated to contain in-place resources of approximately 183 Tcf; and the Kutai Basin, the third largest CBM basin in Indonesia, is estimated to contain in-place resources of approximately 80 Tcf (SPE, 2004)

To cope with increasing domestic gas demand , the country is aggressively searching for unconventional gas reserves, such as CBM and shale

To date, the government has awarded 20 CBM contracts .Although there are ambitious targets for some of the CBM blocks to start production as early as 2011, experts say that realistically CBM production in Indonesia will only start 3-4 years from now.

For the moment , all current activities in CBM in Indonesia are exploration related. Hence, many companies are desperate for exploration knowledge in this stage

  • How do you identify potential CBM targets ?
  • What is the gas composition, gas content, coal thickness and permeability ?

Requirements for accurate estimates of CBM reserves and production forecasts have become increasingly important.

  • How do you evaluate CBM data ? - what makes a good CBM prospect ?

It is important for every CBM developer to know how to develop a cost effective strategic exploration program.

  • How do you determine the CBM project economics ? What factors must be considered ?
  • What is an effective drilling & completion program ? What are the issue and technical challenges faced ?
  • How do you best manage your water production plans ?

Obtain all these practical knowledge from this workshop and you will be on the right track in your CBM exploration & production planning program ! Sign up now at www.cmtevents.com.

Key Benefits of Attending

  • Understand the 'big picture' of CBM, exploration strategy, reservoir fundamentals and drilling. This results in greater job confidence, enthusiasm and productivity for CBM exploration projects.
  • Assess how gas bearing coal basins are formed, the history ofCBM exploration and development of cost effective CBM projects.
  • Using samples of maps, sections, wells, cores, cuttings and geological data, the participants will develop an understanding of how CBM exploration companies assess a particular region.
  • Use examples from the basins of Australia, America and Turkey and review the techniques used for finding CBM, such as geochemical, seismic surveys, and drilling including how gas in place estimates are made.

The fledgling coalbed methane industry in Indonesia eventually could deliver as much as 15% of Indonesia's gas supply needs, a recent report from Wood Mackenzie Ltd. says.

The report’s most optimistic scenario sees Indonesia producing CBM at an initial rate of 22 MMcfd by 2013, ramping up to almost 900 MMcfd in 2020, and 1.3 bcf in 2025, as conventional domestic gas supply starts decreasing in about 2020. The report notes that in practice, production growth will be slower than this.

Challenges that may impede large-scale CBM developments in the next 10 years, according to WoodMac, include uncertainties in fiscal terms for CBM production; a slow approvals process; lack of clarity on ownership rights where acreage overlaps with coal concessions; the effect of operations on the environment, and the high costs of CBM production under current contract terms.

Essar Energy, part of Indian shipping-to-telecoms conglomerate Essar Group, plans to bid for coal-bed methane (CBM) and shale gas blocks in Indonesia next month, the Business Standard reported on Wednesday, quoting a company official.

"This would be our first international foray into unconventional resources," the newspaper quoted S.R. Agarwal, director and CEO, Essar Exploration and Production India Ltd, as saying.

Essar will also bid for similar assets in China at the end of this year, the paper said.

Essar Energy has five CBM blocks in India, it said.

Batavia Energy has announced that Medco CBM Sekayu, an operator of the Sekayu coal bed methane production sharing contract, has confirmed that a drilling rig is on location and rigging up on the Sekayu PSC acreage in South Sumatra, Indonesia.

The utilization of a second rig is also planned. The main target for coal bed methane gas (CBM) exploration is the coal-bearing Middle Palembang formation, which is characterized by continuous and thick coal from multiple coal seams in two main coal groups. Medco is planning to drill three exploration wells on the Sekayu PSC - CBM-SE-04, CBM-SE-03, CBM-SE-01 and to set intermediate casing.

These three planned exploration wells are estimated to expose approximately 184, 184 and 156 net feet of coal to total depths of 3350ft, 3300ft and 2500ft, respectively. Depending upon initial results, further work on CBM-SE- 01 will test the individual seam groups for permeability, gas content, and the viability of production testing.

Due to well control regulations, the planned wells will be drilled in sequence and coring is planned to commence on the third well first, once it has been cased. Initial results from these operations are anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2010. Should the field program to be completed as planned, the data will complete and verify data already gathered from CBM-SE-02 - the first CBM exploration well drilled in September 2009. This data may provide a refined gasin- place estimate over the block, gas content and permeability ranges, and gas and water production rate estimates. Article Source, 27 Aug 2010.

In reference to above article, questions that come to mind are: First, what does it takes to maximise the returns on investment on cost of drilling and development? Second, what are the pointers to note in CBM data mining? These are just some of the issues that will be discussed at the Cost Effective CBM Exploration Workshop on 25-26 Nov 2010  in  Jakarta. State utility company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) mulls a plan to purchase 500 mmscfd coal bed methane (CBM) from ExxonMobil in the next 5 years, detikfinance.com reported. The cbm product is expected to help add electricity power of 2,000 megawatt-hour (MW).

Director Primary Energy PLN Nur Pamudji said the government has appointed ExxonMobil to make initial study and survey potential development of CBM at Kalimantan. He hoped either in the end of 2010 or the start of 2011 the government will get the result of CBM potency. At present, PLN also has partnered with Sugico that has mining rights at three coal sites of Banjar 1, Banjar 2, and Tapin. Nur Pamudji said the state utility will use the CBM especially for developing Rural Electricity program. As for the future, the director said the initial study will bring more promising business climate to attract investors.

CBM is proving to be a major energy play to meet Indonesia’s growing demand. But in order to fully utilize the resource, one must be updated with essential skills and knowledge of CBM exploration and production completion techniques,  all of which are among the primary discussion topics at the Cost Effective CBM Exploration Workshop in Jakarta, on 25-26 November 2010.

Download program agenda here or email your enquiry to leelin@cmtsp.com.sg if you need more information about the program.

Unlike North America and Australia where CBM has demonstrated and proven performance as an important energy play, Asia is still exploring the potential of this unconventional resource. Asia has great potential for the commercialisation of unconventional gas due to increasing demand and favourable geological factors.

Even before the exploration stage, CBM operators face many challenges - from accessing the CBM reserves, to managing high development cost, to minimizing the economic risk, and avoid cost overruns. Hence, it is essential that CBM developers have the complete overview of CBM, its exploration strategy, reservoir fundamentals and drilling technicalities amongst other issues.

CMT’s Cost Effective CBM Exploration Workshop held on 25-26 November in Jakarta is a timely course to attend. Extensive group sharing and case studies in Australia, America and Turkey will ensure comprehensive coverage of all practical issues & concerns in CBM production.
