Innovating to Increase Regional Market Share

The silicone industry has grown leaps and bounds with improving economies. Sustained strong silicone demand  has triggered a powerful wave of silicone monomer investment in China & India. How will these additional capacities and new players in the industry change the dynamics of the silicone sector?

Silicon metal, one of the major raw materials, goes through wild fluctuating cycles in times of buoyant demand. Producers  need various strategies to manage this major cost component. To secure its supply, Wacker Chemie AG is acquiring the Norwegian FESIL Group’s silicon-metal production site in Holla (near Trondheim). Wacker takes over all of FESIL’s production facilities in Holla, including the related real estate.Asian Metal Copyright Acquiring Holla makes Wacker more independent of raw-material price fluctuations and increases its supply security during peak-demand periods; moreover, the acquisition makes Wacker more competitive in the fierce market of polysilicon.Asian Metal Copyright  ( Source: Asian Metal June 2010). Will this mark the start of more acquisitions? How will the market for silicon metal look like next?

Other than managing costs efficiently, players will need to continuously innovate to increase market share.  How are end user requirements and innovations changing in the different segments from Personal Care, Solar, Automobile, LED, Textiles to Coatings ?

Momentive Performance Materials & BRB International shares on silicone applications for LED Market!
Posted on : 20 Aug, 2010

The increasing use of high-power LEDs places increasing demands on the materials used. The new generation of LED systems are characterized by a high light output with lower power consumption in comparison to traditional light systems. Despite the effectiveness of the lamps, their very compact construction gives rise to high temperatures of up to 150 degrees C, in conjunction with a high proportion of hard blue light radiation. This combination of temperature and radiation leads to accelerated ageing of the optical thermoplastics typically used today, as well as a shortened LED system life of only a few thousand hours. However, the new LSR 7000 series from Momentive offers an innovative alternative for such increased demands.

Thorsten Häuser, head of LSR automotive application technology at Momentive, adds: "The concept of manufacturing lenses from an elastomer at first sounds a little absurd, as this market is traditionally dominated by rigid materials. But facts such as transparency, no expected stress cracks, and the possibility of economically manufacturing complex geometries (including even undercuts) speak clearly in favour of the considerable innovative potential offered by highly transparent LSRs in the application area of future LED systems.

Is there truly an overcapacity situation in silicones industry in China?
Posted on : 30 Apr, 2010

4th Global Silicone Biz Outlook meets on 27 – 28 September 2010 in Shanghai to focus on upcoming new capacities and assess if these added capacities are indeed opportunities or threats to the silicone industry.

Some of the noteworthy industry news that suggest possible overcapacity scenario include:

  • Capacity expansions by Dow Corning and Wacker Chemie AG in Jiangsu, China
  • Bluestar Group and Cabot announcement in January to significantly expand the silica capacity at their joint venture plant in Jiangxi province, China
  • Momentive Performance Materials investment in a new manufacturing facility in India
  • Capacity additions by Chinese silicone suppliers

While the above developments point to positive growth in demand and supply, the threat of market saturation looms.

For that reason, 4th Global Silicone Biz Outlook meet which feature silicone professionals from around the globe, promises to offer participants with invaluable business intelligence and latest updates on the markets.
