“Dow announces plans to construct New Solution Styrene Butadiene Rubber Plant in Europe…..SSBR is the fastest growing segment of the rubber market, with an anticipated annual growth rate of 5-6% over the next several year”   11/6/07, Dow’s News Center.

“Goodyear to expand high-value tire production in Poland”     20/2/07, Goodyear Newsroom

The growth pace seen by some markets such as Romania or Russia is now 10-15%/yr, in contrast with mature markets such as Western Europe or the US, where the growth pace is much lower. Many Russian tire makers are expanding capacities including Russian Tatneft Consortium, with increased production volume to 21 million tires and modernization of Nizhnekamshina’s facilities by 2009 from 5 – 9 million, with radial production increasing to 3 mil units.

Tire makers like Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Continental, Nokian, Hankook & many others have expanded or set up new production in Eastern Europe, signaling a shift of production further East & also demand growth in these countries. Will this prompt raw material suppliers to expand their capacities or relocate production to where the growth is to better tap the growing sectors? What are the challenges when moving East?

From 2010, EU Directive 2005/69/EC states that the tire industry in the EU will have to do without the widely used DAE oils. The ban on DAE oils presents major challenges to the tire industry because they cannot easily be replaced in tire production. What are the alternatives available? With the implementation of REACH legislation this June, what is the impact to the tire & rubber industry?
