"Middle East & Africa PET Markets in Transition :
Amidst Major Capacity Expansion"

With a competitive edge in raw materials backed by new capacities coming on stream, Middle East is all set to emerge as a focal PET hub. Are we seeing a new era of ME growth for PET with increasing investments and trade ? Will Africa follow suit as a fast growing market for PET?

"PET consumption in the region was 1.2 million MT in 2009, and is expected to exceed global growth rates andincrease by 7% annually in the medium term. Althoughthe region is in the middle of a major expansion boom, it is still expected to be a net importer of PET until 2011 -2012"
August 2010, Gulf Petrochemicals & Chemicals Association

"India's Dhunseri Petrochem and Tea is proceeding with plans to build a PET resin plant in An-Sokhna Port, Egypt. The $170m project will have a 1,200 tonne/day capacity, one third larger than originally planned."
August 2010, ICIS Chemical Business

First in the series of CMT's PET conferences for the coming year, 12th MEAPET will address the shifts in PET markets in the region and explore the nuances of PET business and the end use markets such as bottled water, edible oil & personal care, etc.

PET could be the future of packaging in the brewing industry, delegates to the International Brewing Convention in Manchester, UK, were told this week. Geoff Giles, a Fellow of the Institute of Packaging and a consultant with idiPac, gave a lecture to the convention on innovations in packaging.

Among the trends and ideas he recommended delegates should monitor over the next few years is the development of PET packaging for beer.

“You can do things with PET that you cannot do with other materials,” he said. “The market for PET bottles has the potential to grow. If carbon foot-printing becomes more important and you have to publish environmental data on your packaging, this could give a competitive advantage to PET.

“Waste management may also be a key driver in the future and PET’s recyclability will be important.”

Consumer market firms say Ketepa’s entry into the Sh12 billion bottled water market is informed by the high rate of annual growth that has averaged seven per cent in the past 10 years and is expected to record a 42 per cent growth in the next three years.

Last year’s prolonged drought is estimated to have accelerated growth in the 314 million litre bottled water market by at least three percentage points, making it even more attractive to thirsty soft drink makers looking for new avenues of growth.

Kenya’s bottled water market is dominated by the 300ml plastic bottles that are sold at an average of Sh20.
